With today’s news full of home break-ins, resulting in loss of possessions and even life, people are becoming more and more aware of the need for some kind of protection. As a result, many are opting for a home security system.

There are a number of home security cameras on the market. Typically, a contract is involved in which the homeowner agrees to pay a certain amount each month for the service. The majority of contracts have a portion which allows the homeowner to ‘sign out’, if they move, provided they give the company at least 30 days’ notice. The monthly service charges vary according to the company and the package selected. There are no activation or equipment fees.

The home security company comes to the home and installs a series of sensors to doors and windows with a control panel, located on a wall, to turn it on or off. This panel is connected to a monitoring system that is available 24-hours per day. As a rule, the system also includes smoke detectors, motion detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and other features. Some systems also have video camera and text message options.

The homeowner simply turns on the system when they leave the property. Some sophisticated systems have a smartphone app, with an alert sensor, which can be taken to work. This makes it possible for the homeowner to actually view the property. It also has voice activation that allows them to speak and deter any break-in.

The home security company will place a sign in the front yard which indicates that the system is in place. This has been advantageous as most petty thieves do not want to risk having police on the premises while they are trying to commit a burglary.

Home security systems take up a minimum of space and, including the wall panel, do not detract from the home’s décor. In addition, there is no extensive wiring and these sensors are tamper-resistant, high-quality and virtually ‘disable proof’.

Home security systems are connected to a 24-hour monitoring center. When an alarm is triggered, the system sends a cellular network signal to the person on duty who will immediately respond. If there is no response at the home, the operator will notify the local police or fire department depending on the problem detected by the security system.

Each home security system has its own special features and, as a rule, has only one control panel. When the system is armed, a signal is sent to the monitoring center every time a door is opened or a window compromised. If you accidentally trip the system yourself, the operator will come on and provide the opportunity to turn it off.

A basic home security system will usually start at around $30 per month. Many homeowners feel this is an excellent way to protect their property. It is always a good idea to check out several different companies to see what they offer prior to making a selection.
